Why Taleemi Caravan

Taleemi Caravan, a people’s movement for realization of the Right to Education in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh aims to educate and encourage parents to enroll their children in school with particular focus on girl children.Education is power and power transforms a society. We believe that significant change in society can come through education in general and girl’s education in particular. In impoverished communities, girls go on to become mothers much too soon, burdened with responsibilities of raising the next generation, with limited knowledge and minimal support... and the cycle repeats. To break this vicious cycle, Taleemi Caravan is needed. Bahraich district has one of the lowest literacy rates in the country and is a home to largest number of marginalized communities. In Bahraich and neighboring district Sravasti the Muslim Women's literacy rate is lowest in the country. The Chittora and Risia block of the district record only 16 percent literacy rate among Muslim women followed by 23 percent among Dalit women. Taleemi Caravan, a people’s movement for realization of the Right to Education in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh aims to educate and encourage parents to enroll their children in school with particular focus on girl children. We believe it will lead to better enrollment of Muslim and Dalit girls along with other marginalized communities.

Who we are

The Taleemi Caravan is a not-for-profit people’s movement funded and supported by individual community members and aspires to use local resources for improvement in education and overall community development.

Beginning of a momentum

Taleemi Caravan Bahraich, Initial planning meetings with village community members and discussions with local governments and other stakeholders through Taleemi Caravan have already been held in all villages.Starting in June 2010 covering 100 villages of 2 blocks, Taleemi Caravan will start to engage the community in a way that they understand that education for their children is a necessity for better future, and not a matter of option that can be taken lightly. We felt that at the grass root level, with no resources, the only way for us to meaningfully help is to involve local people who are committed to this effort. It is aimed that the movement will be covered by the local print media and will be digitally documented. A minimum of 2 signboards/banners will be posted in public places in each village. It will provide detailed information, explanations of right to education and entitlements, and directions for posting complaints to education and other government departments. Initial planning meetings with village community members and discussions with local governments and other stakeholders through Taleemi Caravan have already been held in all villages. Input from marginalized/disadvantaged groups (e.g. women, religious minorities, Dalits and physically challenged) have been solicited. The program will also be discussed through community gatherings.

Community Engagement

The project has a strong social focus. Community based planning and management build local preferences into the core fabric of the program, and the project’s transparency and management formats are designed to promote transparency and ease of use for villagers. The cultural component of the project is designed to involve traditional leadership and to incorporate local values into the recovery process.
